Thirteen Candidates Lose Deposits in Three Manikganj Constituencies

According to the Election Commission’s rule, a candidate must obtain at least 12.5 percent of the total valid votes cast in the constituency to retain the deposit. Candidates who fall short of this threshold forfeit the Tk 25,000 they deposit to contest the national election. The provision aims to reduce non-serious participation in the electoral process.

Thirteen out of twenty candidates contesting in the three parliamentary constituencies of Manikganj have lost their security deposits in the 13th National Parliamentary Election. An analysis of the official results shows that a significant number of candidates in each seat failed to secure the minimum required votes to retain their deposits.

According to the Election Commission’s rule, a candidate must obtain at least 12.5 percent of the total valid votes cast in the constituency to retain the deposit. Candidates who fall short of this threshold forfeit the Tk 25,000 they deposit to contest the national election. The provision aims to reduce non-serious participation in the electoral process.

Manikganj-1 (Ghior-Daulatpur-Shibaloy): A total of 2,98,463 valid votes were cast in this constituency. Based on the calculation, a candidate needed at least 37,308 votes to retain the deposit. Four of the seven candidates failed to reach the required number.

The candidates who lost their deposits are: Independent candidate Md Abdul Ali Bepari received 6,966 votes, Mohammad Eliyas Hossain of Gono Odhikar Parishad received 1,066 votes, Mohammad Shahjahan Khan of Jonotar Dol received 283 votes and Md Khorshed Alam of Islami Andolan Bangladesh received 3,247 votes.

Manikganj-2 (Singair-Harirampur and part of Sadar): This constituency recorded 2,68,235 valid votes. A candidate needed at least 33,529 votes to save the deposit. Two of the four candidates failed to secure the required percentage.

The candidates who lost their deposits are: S. M. Abdul Mannan of Jatiya Party received 7,081 votes and Mohammad Ali of Islami Andolan Bangladesh received 3,847 votes.

Manikganj-3 (Sadar-Saturia): A total of 2,66,032 valid votes were counted here. The minimum requirement for retaining a deposit was 33,254 votes. Seven of the nine candidates failed to reach the threshold.

The candidates who lost their deposits are: Independent candidate Ataur Rahman Ata received 20,551 votes, anather Independent candidate Mofizul Islam Khan Kamal received 684 votes, Independent candidate Rafiqul Islam Khan received 3,610 votes, Md Shahjahan Ali of Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal received 3,510 votes, Moazzem Hossain Khan Mojlish of Jatiya Party (JP) received 1,337 votes Shamsuddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh received 2,787 votes and Abul Bashar Badsha of Jatiya Party received 1,966 votes.

Across the three constituencies, 20 candidates contested the election, but 13 of them failed to secure the minimum required votes. As a result, their security deposits were forfeited under the Election Commission’s regulations.
